Privacy policy


1.1 The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (Registered Number 02837793) (‘BSAVA’) is committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected and the BSAVA is compliant with the Data Protection Act 1998. This privacy policy (‘Privacy Policy’) explains how the BSAVA uses the information the BSAVA collects about you and the procedures that the BSAVA has in place to safeguard your privacy.

1.2 By using the BSAVA’s websites http://www.bsava.com, http://www.bsavalibrary.com or such variations to the names of the aforesaid domain names (‘Websites’), purchasing any products (‘Products’) from the Websites or using any of the services (‘Services’) including apps ('Apps') set out in the Websites, you consent to the BSAVA using the information the BSAVA collects about you. If you do not agree with the terms and conditions set out in this Privacy Policy, do not continue to use the Websites.

1.3 For the purpose of the Data Protection Act 1998, the data controller is the BSAVA.


2.1 When you visit the Websites, join the Websites as a registered user/member or purchase Products and/or Services and/or Apps offered on the Websites, the BSAVA may collect information including your name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone number, credit card number and expiry date, Products and/or Services and/or Apps obtained and such other relevant information which the BSAVA deems necessary to provide you with Product and/or Services and/or Apps and provide maintenance and support services. Where necessary, the information collected is transmitted in a secure manner to third parties to assist the BSAVA to provide you with the Products and/or Services and/or Apps requested by you and to maintain the support services of the BSAVA.

2.2 Subject to the terms and conditions of this Privacy Policy, the BSAVA protects all personal and financial data from being disclosed to any third parties except when required by law. In addition, the BSAVA may use your information to assist in the prevention of unlawful activities e.g. money laundering or activities that threaten the BSAVA’s Websites or is adverse to your or the BSAVA’s interest.

2.3 The BSAVA may also use aggregate information and statistics (which will not contain your identifying information) for the purposes of monitoring your use of the Websites in order to help the BSAVA develop the Websites and the Products and/or Services and/or Apps offered by the BSAVA. The BSAVA may provide such aggregate information to third parties.

2.4 The BSAVA may collect information which is based upon your behaviour and navigation on the Websites. This information allows the BSAVA to carry out internal research on the users’ interest, demographics and behaviour so that the BSAVA can better understand, and in turn provide better information, products and services to you and other customers or members.

2.5 The BSAVA may also wish to provide you with information about special features featured on the Websites or any other service or products the BSAVA thinks may be of interest to you.

2.6 The BSAVA may also want to provide you with related information from third parties that it thinks may be of interest to you.

2.8 Subject to the other provisions of this Privacy Policy and such other provisions specified on the Websites, the BSAVA will not provide your information to other companies or organisations without your consent.


3.1 The BSAVA uses ‘cookies’ and other technologies to collect information on site to assist the BSAVA in monitoring the BSAVA’s web page flow and promotional effectiveness as well as to promote trust and safety. We store no personal data or long-term tracking data in our cookies, only temporary session data.

3.2 Certain features on the Websites are only available if you enable the cookie. The BSAVA also uses a cookie to assist it to provide information that is relevant to your interest.

3.3 You are free to decline the BSAVA’s cookies, although that may impair certain features on the Websites.

3.4 You can delete any cookies from your computer – refer to your internet browser’s help files.

3.5 The BSAVA may also track certain information through the use of JavaScript code and third-party web site analytics providers.


4.1 The internet is not a secure medium. However, the BSAVA has put in place various security procedures and strict policy rules to safeguard and protect your information from unauthorised and unlawful access and use. These security procedures and policies, which are of the highest standards, are continuously improved.

4.2 Notwithstanding the above, it should be appreciated that no system is entirely foolproof and you should be careful when you reveal any confidential information to any third party.


5.1 If the BSAVA and/or part of its business is sold or integrated with another business, your details may be disclosed to the BSAVA’s advisers and any prospective purchasers and their advisers and will be passed on to the new owners of the BSAVA.

5.2 The BSAVA reserves the right to disclose your data (and you consent to such disclosure) if the BSAVA is under a duty to disclose or share your personal data in order to comply with any legal obligation, or in order to enforce or apply the BSAVA’s Member’s Terms and Conditions, Registered User's Terms and Conditions, our Website Terms of Use, Online Trading Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy, and other agreements; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of the BSAVA, the BSAVA’s customers or members. This includes exchanging information with other companies and organisations for the purposes of fraud protection and credit risk reduction.


If any of the information that you have provided to the BSAVA changes - for example, if you change your e-mail address, name or payment details or if you wish to cancel your membership as a member or registered user - please contact the BSAVA by sending an e-mail to [email protected] or update your details through your BSAVA online profile.


You have the right to request a copy of the information that we hold about you. If you would like a copy of some or all of your personal information, please email us at [email protected]. We want to make sure that your personal information is accurate and up to date. You may ask us to correct information you think is inaccurate. You may also ask us to delete information about you, although this may mean that we are unable to effectively provide you with services. We will also, where possible, ensure that we keep your data in a form which ensures its portability to another provider of services similar to ours.


We will retain your information only for as long as it is necessary to provide you with services and to comply with any laws or regulations.  


9.1 Owing to the global nature of the Internet infrastructure, the information you provide may be transferred in transit to countries outside the European Economic Area that do not have similar protections in place regarding your data and its use as set out in this Privacy Policy. However, the BSAVA has taken the steps outlined above to try to improve the security of your information. By using the Websites, you consent to these transfers.

9.2 The BSAVA supplies links to other websites. If you click on a link, you are not protected by this Privacy Policy and you are advised to read the privacy policy of the other website as they may differ from this Privacy Policy.

9.3 The BSAVA reserves the right to amend this Privacy Policy from time to time as it deems necessary. In such event, the BSAVA will post such changes on the Websites.
