Abstract

Human coevolution with dogs gives them a unique advantage in fulfilling the role of man’s best friend; their sensitivity and responsiveness to human emotional states as well as their ability to enjoy shared activities, walks, play and tactility further endear them to their owners. This chapter reviews meeting basic nutritional needs, elimination and toileting behaviours, shelter and resting areas, physical activities, treats and rewards, tactile affection, independence from owner, training and structured activities, routine activities.
