Blood smears are used in assessment of white blood cell differential count, leucocyte abnormalities, red blood cell morphology, platelet count and platelet abnormalities.

Figure B.15: A small amount of blood should be placed on a microscope slide. The ‘spreader’ slide should be held between the thumb and middle finger with the index finger placed on top of the ‘spreader’. The ‘spreader’ should be placed in front of the blood spot and drawn backwards until it comes into contact with the blood. The ‘spreader’ slide should be kept at the same angle and moved rapidly yet smoothly away to create a blood smear.
