Foreword

The BSAVA Guide to Common Canine and Feline Poisons has become a trusted and widely used resource for veterinary professionals. What began as a collaboration has developed into a longstanding and highly valued partnership, marking 15 years of close working between the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) and the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS).

During this time, our understanding of poisoning in small animals has continued to evolve, supported by the dedication and expertise of the VPIS team, and by the many veterinary surgeons who contribute case data and clinical insight. This collective effort has ensured that the Guide remains grounded in real-world evidence and practical experience. This reprint includes selected updates from VPIS, reflecting the latest available knowledge and ensuring continued relevance in practice.

We are proud that over 4,000 print copies of the Guide have been distributed, alongside the online version available through the BSAVA Library. The Guide is also available to BSAVA members via the BSAVA App, improving accessibility for veterinary professionals in a range of clinical settings.

While the format and delivery of information continue to develop, the core purpose of the Guide remains unchanged: to support veterinary teams in the recognition and management of poisoning cases in dogs and cats. We acknowledge with gratitude the foundational contributions of Alex Campbell and the early VPIS team, whose work helped shape the field and establish the principles on which this Guide is built. We also thank the many veterinary professionals whose ongoing engagement with VPIS continues to advance our shared knowledge.

BSAVA looks forward to continuing this important collaboration with VPIS, supporting the profession, and ultimately improving outcomes for poisoned pets.
