  This year’s guest speaker for the opening of BSAVA Congress was someone who has helped others to see the world in a different way. Read on to be inspired by Amar Latif.

It’s that uplifting time of year when the BSAVA awards are presented as a celebration of excellence and dedication, recognizing sustained contributions to the veterinary profession across a wide range of areas. The 2021 and 2022 winners received their prizes at BSAVA Congress, which took place at Manchester Central last month. BSAVA Honorary Secretary, Krista Arnold, extended her congratulations to all those receiving an accolade and added: “All the nominations were exceptional, making judging particularly difficult this year.”

The BSAVA is supporting the launch of a scheme called the Dog-friendly Clinic aimed at helping to ensure that pets enjoy a positive experience when they undergo veterinary care. The project will provide resources and training for all members of the practice team to better understand canine behaviour so that they can minimize any stress resulting from the examination and treatment.   Hanna Machin and Chiara Adami provide a report on their BSAVA PetSavers funded investigation into the analgesic effect of dry needle acupuncture on dogs undergoing surgical treatment of type I intervertebral disc extrusions.

  Glasgow vet Ross Allan developed a passion for speech radio as a child and remembers at 11 or 12 years old sending letters to the BBC offering comments on its output. So, it is a real thrill for him to take a break from his clinical work for his fortnightly appointment with Ask the Vet, part of BBC Radio Scotland’s Mornings show. John Bonner tuned in to hear what he had to say.
