BVA and BSAVA Policy Position and FAQs on Neutering of Cats and Dogs

BVA and BSAVA have published a joint Policy Position on the Neutering of Cats and Dogs (February 2026). The joint Policy Position examines the current evidence base, including the WSAVA Guidelines for the Control of Reproduction in Dogs and Cats (published in 2024), to support vets in small animal practice in their decision making when considering neutering. The Policy Position discusses the benefits and risks for male and female cats and dogs, together with surgical and medical options and behavioural considerations. Alongside the Policy Position, a series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) has been prepared for BSAVA members.
