Abstract

PLEASE NOTE. THE NEW 5TH EDITION OF THE BSAVA MANUAL OF ENDOCRINOLOGY IS NOW AVAILABLE HERE.

Ketoacidosis occurs when there is excessive production and accumulation of ketoacids within the circulation. When excessive amounts accumulate they overwhelm the buffering capacity of the body and a metabolic acidosis and acidaemia develop. This chapter looks at aetiology, clinical features, history and physical examination, diagnosis and treatment.
