Abstract
Most importantly, antibacterials assist the patient’s immune system in controlling an active infection. In chronic gastrointestinal (GI) disease, antibacterials may also be prescribed for their effects on the microbiome. This chapter discusses antibiotic resistance, considers GI conditions in which antibiotics are and are not required, and provides a list of antibacterials for treatment of GI disease.
