BSAVA Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice
Author Georgia Woods-LeeVeterinary professionals are often called upon to provide guidance on appropriate nutrition for animals under their care. Since nutrition is the cornerstone of all good veterinary care it should ideally form part of the discussion with every pet owner seeking advice about their pet. As veterinary professionals, our advice to our clients should always be based on sound scientific evidence, whenever available, excellent clinical reasoning and informed risk management. Given the wealth of information available to pet owners, it is the responsibility of veterinary professionals to assist them in making decisions about what to feed their pet. As well as ensuring that minimum nutritional requirements are met, the chosen diet should ideally provide optimal nutrition.
This guide contains information on hospital and critical care nutrition, management strategies for adverse reactions to food and the key role nutrition plays in pets with chronic kidney disease.
Additional resources have been included to enhance the degree of pet owner understanding with printable client handouts to reiterate the information given during consultations.
This updated and expanded guide replaces the original online-only guide which was published in 2022 and updated in 2023. It is also now available as a printed book.
Written by Georgia Woods-Lee and edited by Marge Chandler and Alex J. German.

BSAVA/SAMSoc/RWA&F Guide to Responsible Use of Antibiotics in Rabbits
Antibiotic use (both appropriate and inappropriate) imposes a powerful selection pressure on bacteria and is the primary driver of antibiotic resistance. Eliminating unnecessary use in humans and animals is, therefore, essential to safeguard this invaluable resource. A key component in the fight against antibiotic resistance is the adoption of antibiotic stewardship initiatives in both human and animal healthcare. The PROTECT ME Antibiotic use in rabbits poster and appendices in this supporting guide are designed to help you decide when and how to use antibiotics responsibly.
A PDF of the PROTECT ME Antibiotic use in rabbits poster is available with the PROTECT ME chapter and BSAVA members can request printed copies for their practice. A form to support client communication where no antibiotic is required has also been developed. Printed PROTECT ME posters and ‘non prescription’ pads are available from the BSAVA store.

BSAVA/SAMSoc Guide to Responsible Use of Antibiotics: PROTECT ME (2024)
Antibiotic use (both appropriate and inappropriate) imposes a powerful selection pressure on bacteria and is the primary driver of antibiotic resistance. Eliminating unnecessary use in humans and animals is, therefore, essential to safeguard this invaluable resource. A key component in the fight against antibiotic resistance is the adoption of antibiotic stewardship initiatives in both human and animal healthcare. PROTECT was first launched in 2012 as a joint initiative by SAMSoc (the Small Animal Medicine Society) and the BSAVA; this was updated and expanded in 2018 when BSAVA and SAMSoc developed an updated ‘PROTECT ME’ poster and online supporting information which is freely available to the veterinary profession. The poster, online supporting information and ‘no antibiotic required’ form were updated in 2023. The appendices in this supporting guide are designed to be used in conjunction with the poster.
BSAVA, SAMSoc and the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWA&F) have also produced a Guide to Responsible Use of Antibiotics in Rabbits and an associated PROTECT ME poster.
A PDF of the PROTECT ME poster is available with the PROTECT ME chapter and BSAVA members can request printed copies for their practice. A form to support client communication where no antibiotic is required has also been developed. Printed PROTECT ME posters and ‘non prescription‘ pads are available from the BSAVA store.

For each agent, information is given on toxicology, clinical effects, appropriate first aid and subsequent management and prognosis. The level of urgency is indicated in each case. Please note that the poisons entries are not intended to provide comprehensive advice about the management of any case and should not be the sole information resource used to manage a poisoning case.
