Antimicrobial resistance
Antimicrobial stewardship – where are we now? Author Lizzie Croose
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most critical global public health challenges we face. It is estimated to have been directly responsible for 1.14 million deaths and contributed to 4.71 million deaths globally in 2021, and it is predicted that 39 million people could die from antibiotic resistant infection over the next 25 years. Lizzie Croose, BSAVA Scientific Editor, reports…

BSAVA/SAMSoc/RWA&F Guide to Responsible Use of Antibiotics in Rabbits
Antibiotic use (both appropriate and inappropriate) imposes a powerful selection pressure on bacteria and is the primary driver of antibiotic resistance. Eliminating unnecessary use in humans and animals is, therefore, essential to safeguard this invaluable resource. A key component in the fight against antibiotic resistance is the adoption of antibiotic stewardship initiatives in both human and animal healthcare. The PROTECT ME Antibiotic use in rabbits poster and appendices in this supporting guide are designed to help you decide when and how to use antibiotics responsibly.
A PDF of the PROTECT ME Antibiotic use in rabbits poster is available with the PROTECT ME chapter and BSAVA members can request printed copies for their practice. A form to support client communication where no antibiotic is required has also been developed. Printed PROTECT ME posters and ‘non prescription’ pads are available from the BSAVA store.

Antimicrobial stewardship
Improving diagnostic stewardship for antimicrobials Author Lizzie Croose
How can veterinary diagnostic laboratories and clinicians in practice work together more effectively to optimize the interpretation of antimicrobial susceptibility tests (AST), and determine the optimal antimicrobial treatment for any clinical case? This was the question tackled at an antimicrobial stewardship event organized by the Small Animal Medicine Society (SAMSoc) and hosted at the University of Surrey in November 2024. BSAVA Scientific Editor Lizzie Croose reports…

BSAVA/SAMSoc Guide to Responsible Use of Antibiotics: PROTECT ME (2024)
Antibiotic use (both appropriate and inappropriate) imposes a powerful selection pressure on bacteria and is the primary driver of antibiotic resistance. Eliminating unnecessary use in humans and animals is, therefore, essential to safeguard this invaluable resource. A key component in the fight against antibiotic resistance is the adoption of antibiotic stewardship initiatives in both human and animal healthcare. PROTECT was first launched in 2012 as a joint initiative by SAMSoc (the Small Animal Medicine Society) and the BSAVA; this was updated and expanded in 2018 when BSAVA and SAMSoc developed an updated ‘PROTECT ME’ poster and online supporting information which is freely available to the veterinary profession. The poster, online supporting information and ‘no antibiotic required’ form were updated in 2023. The appendices in this supporting guide are designed to be used in conjunction with the poster.
BSAVA, SAMSoc and the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWA&F) have also produced a Guide to Responsible Use of Antibiotics in Rabbits and an associated PROTECT ME poster.
A PDF of the PROTECT ME poster is available with the PROTECT ME chapter and BSAVA members can request printed copies for their practice. A form to support client communication where no antibiotic is required has also been developed. Printed PROTECT ME posters and ‘non prescription‘ pads are available from the BSAVA store.
