Animal ethics and welfare
BSAVA Manual of Practical Veterinary WelfareAuthor James YeatesAnimal welfare and ethics are not sub-disciplines within veterinary science or medicine, they are integral to everything veterinary professionals do. Emotional and intuitive assessments and decisions have their place, but often one can feel more confident when more structured and reflective methods are used. This chapter covers legal, professional and moral responsibilities, outcomes that matter to animals and others, how domesticity/captivity compromises welfare, key legislation and ethical issues applicable to small animal veterinary practice and animal advocacy. This chapter also contains a downloadable admission form.

Focus on… veterinary ethics
How far should we go? Author Anne Quain
There is no doubt that the standard of veterinary care and the options available for treating companion animals have increased. We live in an era where it is not unusual for animals to undergo advanced diagnostic tests and treatments that would have been unthinkable a mere decade ago. Referral to specialists in state-of-the-art facilities has become routine, but how far should we go? Anne Quain from the Sydney School of Veterinary Science considers the ethics behind this dilemma.

No consent? What you can do with the unowned RTA: Ethical and legal aspects of approaching the RTA case with no owner present
BSAVA Affiliate Group Lectures 2021Author Caroline AllenBeing presented with a seriously injured animal can be stressful at any time; when they have no owner this can create additional complications. As well as providing appropriate treatment, it is important to be able to navigate through the relevant laws and RCVS advice in order to maximise animal welfare, make best use of any funds available and avoid unnecessary stress. In this presentation Caroline Allen, Chief Vet of the RSPCA, provides this useful information and more, so that you can approach these cases with confidence. An understanding of where charities can help, and where they can’t, is also important to avoid frustration and misunderstandings. The role of the RSPCA in these situations is often misunderstood; using case studies, the presentation explores where the responsibilities lie and the role of the RSPCA. This presentation will be useful to anyone in practice who might be presented with an unowned, injured animal and be worried about what to do.
