Veterinary medicine carries legal and ethical responsibilities beyond the clinic. Veterinary surgeons must ensure the health and welfare of animals under their care, and also deal with controlled substances. Staff have to balance animal needs, owner autonomy, and financial constraints. Strong legal knowledge and ethical training ensures compassionate, defensible decisions, reducing moral distress and upholding the professional requirement to protect animal health and welfare.
