The UK is at increased risk of avian influenza over the winter months, owing both to the flight paths of migratory birds and the ability of the virus to survive in the environment in low temperatures.

They seek out new homes for birds destined for the slaughterhouse at the end of their productive careers, and work to improve understanding of hen health and welfare. Jane set up the British Hen Welfare Trust in 2005 and talks to Companion about their plans to support clinical research on the common diseases affecting backyard poultry.
